VB-MAPP

There are several components to the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program  (or VB-MAPP):

  1. Milestones Assessment- assesses learning and language milestones across 3 developmental levels (0-18 months, 18-30 months, and 30-48 months).

  2. Barriers Assessment- assesses common learning and language barriers.

  3. Task Analysis and Skills Tracking – serves as a more complete and ongoing learning and languages skills curriculum guide  across 3 developmental levels (0-18 months, 18-30 months, and 30-48 months).

Once testing is complete, an individualized education program (IEP) with clearly defined and measurable goals will be developed for your child.

ABLLS-R

The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills-Revised (ABLLS-R)  is an assessment and curriculum guide for children who have language delays and is commonly used with children on the autism spectrum.  The ABBLS-R is comprised of four different sections:

  1. Basic Learner- assesses a variety of critical early learning and basic language skills

  2. Academic Skills- assesses reading, math, writing and spelling skills

  3. Self-Help Skills- assesses dressing, eating, grooming and toilet skills

  4. Motor Skills- assesses gross and fine motor skills

Once testing is complete, an individualized education program (IEP) with clearly defined and measurable goals will be developed for your child.

ASSESSMENTS

Your child will work one-to-one with a Board Certified Behavior Analyst on the goals outlined in their IEP.  All IEP goals will be based on the results of either the VB-Mapp or the ABLLS-R assessment, the descriptions of which are outlined above.  All therapy sessions will last at least one hour per visit to provide sufficient time for learning; the frequency of weekly sessions will be determined on an individual basis.  Your child’s progress will be monitored closely and you will receive progress updates from the behavior analyst at weekly meetings.

IN HOME THERAPY

Consistency is key.  As a parent you spend more time with your child than anyone else.  By familiarizing yourself with your child’s programs, which will be developed and monitored by the behavior analyst, you can maximize your child’s learning opportunities. For example, if tooth brushing is identified as a skill that your child needs to master, and only the behavior analyst is privy to the task analysis (this is a common teaching technique for tooth brushing) then your child is missing out on opportunities to practice this skill each day.

Parent training extends beyond the academic threshold and can also apply to decreasing problematic behavior. If your child engages in problematic behaviors (e.g., aggression or self-injury) it is important for everyone your child interacts with to respond to these behaviors in the same fashion.  Otherwise, it is likely that the behavior will continue.
